The Wine Development Board of Ireland was set up by the Wine and Spirit Association of Ireland in 1977 to promote wine consumption in Ireland. The Board is financed by contributions from most of the wine importers and distributors, retailers, off-licences, supermarkets, and from some of the wine producing countries, in particular France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand.

Since it's foundation in 1977 wine consumption has risen from 1 million cases to nearly 5 million cases and the demand for knowledge of wine has greatly increased, The number of our courses and students have both risen tenfold over the last 10 years. In 2000 the Board held over 100 courses in 32 different venues around the country. These courses were attended by 1900 students. All courses are open to both the trade and consumers
The Board organises an extensive range of training courses for members of the wine trade including management and staff of off-licences, supermarkets, hotels, sommeliers, chefs, bar staff and representatives of distributing firms.
The Board is the agent in Ireland for the training courses of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust - in particular the Certificate, Higher Certificate Course and Diploma.
