| Sky pursue contract with ex-licensee in UK |
How tied are you to your contract with Sky? A former Punch Taverns lessee must continue paying her Sky subscription dues until the end of her contract with the company even though she’s left the pub trade. Julie Crane ran Bar 44 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, for the past 10 years with her husband until last December when she decided to give up the pub due to “rising costs, local competition and a severe drop in trade” but her 12-month contract with Sky runs until August this year and Sky intends enforcing the contract through the courts if necessary unless she pays the company the balance of £6,000 herself. The Sky contract was the only one she was not able to cancel when handing back the keys of the premises to landlord Punch Taverns. She stated, “We asked as a goodwill gesture that they cancel the contract on our behalf with no outstanding debt, but they have been most unhelpful through this already difficult time”. However Sky remained unrepentant. “We can’t comment on individual accounts,” stressed a spokeswoman, “These are the standard business rules that our customers are aware of when they subscribe to Sky. All our customers are treated on a fair and non-discriminatory basis.” |
