| Andy's Bar Award |
Andy''s Bar & Restaurant in Monaghan was recently recognised at the Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) energy awards ''09 held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin, late last year. Sponsored by ESB Customer Supply, the SEI Awards highlight excellence in business energy management.
Andy''s Bar & Restaurant was highly-commended in Category E: Excellence in co-ordinated energy management, for its work in producing and publishing the handbook for the licensed trade.
Sean & Kevin Redmond worked in conjunction with Niall O''Connor & Aileen Owens of the Environment Section at Monaghan County Council and produced a full-colour 36-page handbook entitled Calling Time on Waste. The judges were impressed by the savings that Andy''s had made and by their efforts to replicate similar savings and initiatives elsewhere in the licensed trade. Commenting at the launch of the handbook in May 2009 at the VFI conference in Galway, VFI President Val Hanley noted that, “If every pub introduced these efficiency measures and saved €4,000, over €16 million could be saved in the industry”.
Independent market research by ‘Ask Chilli’ concluded that a staggering 88 per cent of publicans had introduced cost-saving measures within the last year. A further 67 per cent of publicans had introduced electrical cost-saving measures. 33 per cent had reduced water usage, 11 per cent had reduced heating costs and 10 per cent had reduced their waste costs.
SEI Chief Executive Professor Owen Lewis said, “In this, the sixth year of the Energy Awards, SEI is particularly pleased at the number and quality of this year''s entries. We saw a marked increase in entries from smaller businesses that are reaping the rewards of energy management. This is further proof that energy efficiency is on the agenda of every business throughout the country regardless of size or sector.
The Calling Time on Waste Handbook was distributed to over 4,600 VFI members and was largely based on Andy''s environmental programme which has resulted in major net savings each year.
